On Labour Day 1985, Mark Ribble walked into the composing room of the Leamington Post beginning a career that has seen him work in almost every area of the newspaper business. During high school, Mark dreamed about becoming a broadcast journalist, although his love of creative writing kindled an interest in newspaper journalism as well. However, with a high school education and a child on the way, he left the world of real estate for the steady paycheque the composing room provided.

At the Post, he first shifted into advertising sales and then reporting. His photos and stories were frequently picked up on the newswire and featured in newspapers across Ontario and Canada. After the Post closed in 2012, Mark worked in the circulation department of the Windsor Star, before joining the Southpoint Sun, mostly in sales, but he also contributed his popular column “Rib’s Ramblings” and assisted the editorial team where needed. He became the paper’s editor in March 2020, but true to his roots, continues to help with production every week.

Mark’s journalism draws rave reviews from readers and community groups alike. “Whenever we call on Mark to join in at the many events we do over the year, we are never turned down,” wrote Wendy Parsons, general manager of the Leamington District Chamber of Commerce. “If there is an important topic that needs to be reported on, Mark is there.”

This is why the Ontario Community Newspapers Association is thrilled to announce Mark Ribble as an inductee of the OCNA Hall of Fame.

The OCNA Hall of Fame Award recognizes and celebrates individuals who have made exemplary contributions to Ontario’s community newspapers. Inductees are respected community news professionals who have remained passionate about the industry throughout challenges, opportunities, and changes. They are leaders who have helped community newspapers adapt and grow.
